A very credible performance

By Boromatt17/1 11:07Wed Jan 17 11:07:03 2018

Very proud of the boys yesterday, I thought we played bloody well for a smaller league two club against a huge championship club. The difference between the leagues and standards is chances taken, we had a bundle of really good chances, a couple I would actually refer to as sitters, especially Tom Pett’s, but just couldn’t convert. Two things that really impressed me, was the football we played going forward, to create like we did against a championship side was a big positive in my eyes and the second, the way the players conducted themselves and represented the club. Never gave in and kept going to try and get a goal on the score board.

A really good learning curve for the players, especially the younger players at the club and a match where there were plenty of positives to take forward into the league. Also, I think it’s nice that we can solely concentrate on the league and get us over the dotted line.

Also, a huge shout out to all the supporters who made the trip, the support was great and I don’t know the exact figure of us Boro fans, but looked to be up near 1000, maybe 800 or so! Thoroughly enjoyed the evening, to see the players play on a big stadium like that was great, a great experience!

Back to the bread and butter stuff on Saturday!

Reading are in no way a 'massive club'.
Ok they are a bigger club than us in terms of stadium, resources, support etc etc,but there are more 'massive 'clubs than them in the championship.
Nottm forest,Sunderland, aston villa, ipswich town, leeds united, wolves, sheff utd and Wednesday ,to name a few who between them have won european cups,fa cups and league titles amongst other honours.....I could go on ,they are much bigger teams than reading.

Did you not read my post in its entirety? .

I said reading are a bigger club than boro, but they are in no way a massive club as you suggest.

Please do not insult my intelligence re having knowledge of football , I think your constant predictions of a boro win , no matter who we are playing are becoming tiresome and very predictable.

If you would like to have a chat and test my football knowledge then I will be happy to meet you for a drink in stripes. :-)

I’ve been saying for the past 6 hours that we are a small club and reading are much bigger club. I can’t see how you can see that???!

I am questioning your knowledge because for anyone to say that reading aren’t a big club is ridiculous...

Predictions are predictions, I’ve always said if Darren plays the right team we’ll win, has he a lot this season, no.

I’d be more than happy for that, but I’d think you’d get a bit of a footy knowledge shock ;)

The money flow, ex prem status, resources, stadium. I think a club our size to take them over two ties and have the better chances in those, okay we didn’t hit the back of the net, but is a credit and shows the potential we have in the team.

I might have missed something, but Matt called Reading 'a huge Championship Club'. I can't see the reference to being massive and therefore any argument about Man U. Etc is redundant and pointless.

According to the local rag, reading spend the 3rd highest amount of any championship club in the summer (net) so in that sense could be considered huge.

Matt, your positivity in these dark times is a tonic. Keep it up. I'd gladly go for a beer in stripes with you.

Very surprised we didn't make the home tie against them all ticket because of their status as a huge club.

The level of sarcasm coming from your keyboard would suggest you have no better argument, so let's put it to bed now.

Leave Farley to his bubble of positivity. Most men exaggerate now and then... Many a time have I called it 'huge'.

No, because they have far more intelligent people on there than the matt farleys of this world .

Fans who are realistic about the team, its chances against superior oppostion, and who dont tediously predict that watford will win EVERY game.

If farleys predictions came true, we would have been promoted by now.

Still, lets let him carry on with his fantasy football game.

There are a dozen clubs in the championship who are bigger than reading.

As you point out ,this is a football forum, for boro fans and there will be differences of opinions, but insults are not the correct response.

How you know i have'nt knocked anyone out is beyond me, but yet again you finished your post with yet another insult.

If you could partner up with a fellow Borochatter to have a tag team match against two other Borochatters who would you choose?

I'd pick Wasp. I heard he's built like a brick shithouse. At least 6' 7". He has tattoos on his skinhead too.

Right,

Once again we destroyed your argument last night, and you keep coming back for more.

He called them a huge Championship Club. Go back and read it carefully.

Stop being a dumb troll. Just accept that Farley is more popular on here than you.

Your obsession with him is becoming a little sinister.

I dont like violence either, it goes against my christian values. But when someone constantly hurls insults at me, and has to use bad language in the hope of intimidating me, then i will fight back.

I will meet him, ( cant make tomorrow, but should be at the luton game)and see what happens, violence is a last resort, but i will not back down.

If he acted like a mature adult and stopped making threats then good.

I know several people at boro, and they will tell you i am a quiet, passive person and i abhor violence of any kind.

Even when i watch the boro, you will never hear foul language coming from me......maybe the odd sod off ref .

Sorry to hear that you think that of me, because i certainly am not a bully.

I admitt I have had my fair share of arguments on here with certain individuals, but I've come to learnt to rise above drama and live life with getting on with one another and have banter not a personal war.

We are football fans not Jeremy Kyle guests.

Whilst not a great gauge of Boro chatter opinion, I would look at the likes / dislikes of yours and Matts's posts before challenging him to a face to face. Possibly you need to reflect a little on why you seem to attract 'dislikes' so much?

The attention of his 'mundane posts' seems of interest on here, it at least sparks debate and interactions on here. I would suggest you simply use the ignore button.

Alternatively, why not start your own thread about tomorrow's 'massive game' with your own opinion? It might give you the attention you seem to crave.

We might learn lessons like "get within 20 yards of their wide midfielders before they've had chance to control the ball and decide what to do with it" although you might think that's so obvious you wouldn't need to get battered by it for an hour to learn it...

Or getting battered by it for most of the season. At least one of the goals last night was again a perfect example of that. It’s happening too much this season.

Indeed. You can get away with it at home because the pitch is smaller but it's not wonder we struggle on larger pitches against teams who switch the ball well.

Hmm. Many many things I disagree with there.

None moreso than that: 'Also, I think it’s nice that we can solely concentrate on the league and get us over the dotted line.'

Your ambition for us seems to be just to stay up, based on every post you make and constant referrals to getting over the line and the gap between us and the drop zone. That is shit and a failure. We should be challenging top 10/playoffs. We have regressed this season, why are you so happy with it all?

We had 600-odd fans.

Isn't Matt just been realistic?

Yes, we 'should' aim to achieve more, on paper our squad 'should' be in the top 10 but the fact is they aren't so shouldn't the first objective to be to secure our FL status?

Underachievement is just staying up.

That is a ridiculous way of looking at it as the table can change so rapidly and your whole aim for the season would alter on a weekly basis. Lose a couple of games and you want us just to stay up, win a couple and you want us promoted.

But surely if we are down the bottom people at the club would be looking to increase that gap? I understand improving, picking up points and progressing up the table, but considering we're 15th and in a lot of people's eyes struggling under Darren's management, I would suggest that staying up is one of the goals this season.

Genuinely? No. I think that given time we might be. Darren has shown that he can get a draw against the big boys like Wycombe and he even beat high-flying Accrington, so the roots are there. I’d say that once these roots have matured into bushes, then the bushes will start bearing fruit. I personally can’t wait, but we must be careful not to rush it. Give it maybe 2 or 3 more seasons, but only if we can hang to our youngsters like Kennedy, McKee and Gorman.

Agreed, I can’t comment too much on last night as I wasn’t there but Matt’s posts are becoming a little monotonous. In recent games we are definitely playing some nice football but the constant theme is we don’t put away chances ( Godden proving he’s not Championship level ) and we concede too easily, it’s ok being positive but something has to change to turn our away form around. You may be proud Matt but we lost 3-0, it doesn’t matter it was the Cup, we need momentum and to be satisfied we’re edging away from relegation is so negative and is the reason so many of us are becoming disengaged with it all.
You may want to be fan of the year but come on man we can and should be better than our current status.

But vinny, we’re small club, Reading aren’t, away against a team with more money, bigger resources, losing 3-0 away is what a lot of people would have predicted on paper. Look at Mansfield against Cardiff, 4-1. It’s the same, just Mansfield having more money than us. I’m not trying to be fan of the year, I’m a realist, I think we have a good team and a lot of potential, but we’re not Manchester United mate, results like that last night will happen against championship sides away. Anyone that’s played the game to a decent standard will tell you, it’s not rocket science. Yes I agree, we don’t want to lose any match, against anyone, but sometimes especially last night shit like that happens against sides 2 leagues above. As for momentum, we have 4 points from 2, a win Saturday and that 7 out of 3 matches and unbeaten in 3 league games.

At this moment in time Reading on the pitch look anything but a massive club and just going on the home game it was a fantastic opportunity to progress. I agree our resources are one of a club that maintaining League status is an achievement but as a fan I want to see mistakes and incompetence dealt with, not week after week doing the same hoping it changes. For example, for all their potential and putting them in the shop window should McKee and Wilmot play every week especially in the hurly burly of League 2? Do you really think they sat in that dressing room last night thinking, that was good I’ll be much better off for that experience despite losing 3-0. My point is as much as I admire Sarrl I sometimes think his ego has become bigger than what gets results, however in the bigger picture if given time and he gets practically a first 11 of youngsters that play decent stuff I’m onside for that but not sure it’ll happen quickly enough.

Regardless if they haven’t been great vin, we’re still a small club away at a big club which were in the prem. I agree with your point about improving mistakes, we want to see improvements, but to justify those improvements in last nights tie were always going to be tough against a side two leagues above ourselves. Wilmot and McKee are both young, they will learn so much from a tie last night, I would agree if we got hammered that confidence for the young players wouldn’t have been great, but we didn’t get hammered. We played, had some great chances and a blatant penalty turned away. Head up, let’s all chill the fuck out and get back to the all important stuff which is League Two.

Reading being an ex premier league team has nothing to do with it.

Sheffiel Wednesday were in the premier league once and we beat them 5-1 at home and we have also beaten Coventry City and Sheffield utd who are ex premier league sides.

We didn't take our chances last night and were beaten .

Anyone who knows about football will know its what happens on the pitch not the oppositions previous premier league status.....Strewth.

Reading aren’t, away against a team with more money, bigger resources, losing 3-0 away is what a lot of people would have predicted on paper. Look at Mansfield against Cardiff, 4-1. It’s the same

Cardiff are pushing for promotion to the Premier League. Reading are struggling to avoid a relegation battle to League One (they'll be fine, but that's not the point). A lot of people had us down for an upset last night.

I agree, considering the forms between ourselves and reading, there could have been an upset. But upsets don’t always happen. I’ll give you an example, a lot of my mates are spurs, Chelsea lads, prior to our tie last night they all said we’d get beat by a few. It’s not because they think we’re toilet, because we’re not, they said it because we’re small club in League Two and playing reading away at Reading who are a big club. They might be where they are in the league, but let’s not forget they made the cup semi final not so long ago and were in the premier league. I think boys played well last night and did the club proud with the performance, okay we didn’t get a result, but as I said in the thread before, shit happens against sides that are 2 leagues above us.

I don't think we played well. In any position.

We didn't defend as a unit.

They bypassed our midfield and we didn't see the ball for long periods.

We weren't remotely clinical up top and wasted our few good chances.

But we ran ourselves into the ground chasing shadows. So that's OK.

I don't think the team we played are a big championship team. They were a poor Championship team's second string.

As for a big shout out to the fans, some of the homophobic chanting (or banter with the home fans) was bloody embarrassing.

I accept your opinion, but I’m sorry, we were playing a side two leagues above who were in the prem not so long ago, compared to our club dwarfs us in many ways. Just have a look at the stats, it shows we played well and created some really good chances, okay we didn’t convert and that is the difference between the leagues. As for the homophobic chants, I didn’t hear that, if there is proof then obviously that’s horrid, without no evidence I can’t accuse anyone of singing things such as.

Yes they are bigger.

Yes they more money and consequently their squad should be better.

But it wasn't their first team so that should close the gap.

They are in shit order as a club, struggling for confidence and form, so that should close the gap.

They have a manager they don't want, so that should close the gap.

Their confidence would have taken a knock after the first tie, so that should have closed the gap.

My point is it isn't a typical Championship Vs League 2 gap in class.

And I recommend you get your ears syringed ;)

I do understand your point about the gap closing, but ulitumately, the differences between ourselves and the championship is a huge difference. The guy that scored the hatrick played against England for Iceland when we lost for god sake lol! A World Cup player in June and young Ben Wilmot marked him for the full 90.

Matt, the fact they were in the Premier is irrelevant, teams like Coventry, Luton etc have all been in the top division. The fact is on both occasions they were pretty average, we more than matched them but still didn’t win, playing well and matching teams above, below or wherever doesn’t win games.

Is it irrelevant though?? We’re smaller club playing a team that has been in the premier league not so long ago, when was the last time Luton and Coventry were in the prem? To more than match a championship side on both occasions I’d imagine that people would be proud of that, obviously my expectancy from last night was a little different than quite a few people’s, all I’m saying, is to play as well as we did against a big championship should be credited a little. There were times last night that where we were going to caught, it’s not necessarily poor defending, in League Two we might have dealt with it better, but because we were playing a team 2 leagues above, on a big pitch, playing against a quicker standard of football, it made it look like we didn’t do our jobs at times.

Exactly this. We beat Portsmouth home and away last season yet people quickly forget that Pompey were league champions in 1949 and, more recently, 1950. It's this sort of short-sightednessity that undermines what we are trying to achieve as a football club, which is to accrue 50 points come the first week in May.

It's like being a Premier League team, those in the bottom half want to get to 40 and rightly so. Once we get to 50 we can push on.

Yes, and Matt also alludes to this as well. But is there really a need to push on once we reach 50 points? That's when our ultimate objective has been reached and perhaps then the manager can start to plan for the following season's campaign to see whether any changes in personnel and formations etc (you know, the sort of technical stuff that people bang on about) will help us get to 50 points a little bit sooner next year. I understand that's what other clubs try to do. Getting distracted by a meaningless points-accumulation exercise may compromise this forward planning.

Once we get to 50 points the manager can try different things, he's under huge pressure to play youngsters and keep us in the FL, if he does that he's hit 3 of his KPI's set out. 3 out of 4 is good.

I think he already knows what he needs for next season, he'll make some changes this transfer window with the limited funds and players available. Then address the rest in the summer, but again due to our budget he won't get all what he wants and will need to compromise and gamble on a few.

If we survive this season and we're not pushing for the play offs next season he needs to go.

He'll have achieved 2/4.

The entertaining fast-flowing football is a huge fail.

The challenging for the playoffs (for that was the KPI, not staying up) looks to be a fail.

I’m not so sure. Where we have failed to achieve this it’s probably because we’ve been playing teams higher in the table than us.

Good point about the Portsmouth stat. What I’m trying to say is, I don’t mean right once we get over the dotted line that’s it, season finished etc. I want to see the club challenge up the top, but sometimes I think people need bringing back down to ground a little with the expectancy of the team. Let’s not forget, our fanancials aren’t massive, for the money we have at the club I think we do great.
