Why not just stick with the manager?

To be fair to our fans, no one is on Darren's back to much, but why not be different to the majority of todays clubs and give Darren his whole contract.

He has coached for a long while and I am sure he will learn from his mistakes.

There s no chance of his team going down and I think he felt he had enough to challenge for the play offs at the start of the season and we may still.

If not I believe that he will replace the players that need to be.

I just do not get why we have to fall in to the premier league trap of changing do quickly.

Why not give a man who is passionate about Stevenage every chance to succeed.

I feel that was what Phil Wallace was saying in his programme notes a few weeks a go.

We all improve at our job the longer we do it,

Aside my earlier reply and in fairness if he could sort out our away form then I wouldn’t be against him staying. There are about 8 or 9 teams that are woeful away from home and currently we are one of them.

I think this is the crux of the matter. It's not that mid table would be particularly terrible, it's just the feeling of regression.

Still, let's start the year with a win and see where it takes us.

He was made caretaker manager in February 2016. Permanent manager in May 2016.

Here's been at the club for a number of years but manager for less than 2 years. (2 half seasons and one full seasons)

Whether that makes any difference I don't think it does but just so people don't get confused. I know you know that but it will soon be accepted that he's been manager for 2 and half years which isn't the case.

He made positive subs yesterday, they just did not work out.

He has signed probably our two best strikers since Morison and perhaps he is making some mistakes. perhaps he is stubborn and knows more than most fans.

My whole point is it is less than two years. last season was enjoyable and on the whole entertaining.

Why the rush, why be like every other club.

All valid points.

Staying on a positive theme, he is responsible for unearthing 4-5 of our most valuable, cashable assets in Kennedy, Gorman (despite his shortcomings he has a bright future I think), McKee (if his development continues), Newton and Godden.

I have no desire for Stevenage to be the same as every other club.

But, they all change managers more often than I change my pants for the exact same reason many are calling for it here. Because they have lost faith in the incumbent.

I am not happy, I am quite grumpy about the situation, but I have never said sack him. I just can't put forward a compelling argument for keeping him.

Are Gorman and Kennedy that valuable? What did we get for Freeman - 250k? He was better and more experienced than Kennedy. I don’t think Gorman holds any particular cash value.

Currently, McKee is unproven so holds little value. Newton has potential but given this is his first season in league football I’d suggest that his value is limited, which leaves Godden as our only true, cashable asset.

I’ve been frustrated with him all season. Even when we were winning it wasn’t nice to watch. In recent days I came to the conclusion that he should go.

But is that sustainable? We’re 17th. Should every club in every division that finds itself in the bottom half of the table instantly fire the manager? Yes, we’re poor, there’s no plan B, there’s no reaction to events that happen on the pitch, there’s the contrived drinks breaks, the playing of the same players week in week out, the same substitutions. But is it an overreaction to say that Sarll should go, cos I’m genuinely thinking it might be?

Indeed.

Hartlepool sacked their manager after a 1-0 defeat to Crawley in Januaruly whilst 4 points clear of the drop. They went on to get relegated.

My point the other day, no matter how bad it currently may be, we will/would not go down (this season) under Sarll so if we keep him until the end of the season the worst that can happen is the fans get bored of us plodding along this season and we lose some of our better players in the summer and have wasted the chance of a genuine promotion shot with them this year.

Do you twist in order to go for that promotion with the risk that bringing in somebody else could result in relegation or do you stick with the thought that we very likely don't challenge promotion but also very likely don't go down (despite what some on here may suggest) which gives you more time to assess things ready for the summer?

I'd fall on the safe side of the fence and keep things as they are unless things worsen (either results at home or fan feeling at games) and make my decision at the end of the season to a) give Sarll more time as whilst a lot of his management irritates me, his overall results really aren't that bad and b) so a new manager, if that was my decision, had the whole summer to sort things out and could come in fresh. I get that those would want any new manager to come in sooner to assess the squad sooner in order to be better prepared for player movements over the summer.

You talk a lot of sense, (Christ that sticks in the throat). Your argument for sticking rather than sacking is reasonable.

But if our away form and general lack of confidence infects our home form and shaves 10-20% off of our home points between now and April we will be right in the shit.

'Too good to go down' is a dangerous assumption, we are as likely to get worse as we are to get better.

Will a new manager give us a boost or just destabilise us? That's the million dollar question.

Any new manager boost could occur in Feb/March, if that is necessary.

The safe option, IMO, is to stick, and right now it's what I'd do. If things don't dramatically improve over the next four months (better results, especially away, and more enjoyable overall performances) I'd be letting Sarll go at the end of the season and looking elsewhere instead but for now I personally think he's done/doing just enough to have earned himself a little more time.

I've said from day one that Sarll wouldn't ever be the manager to take us forward up the league(s), absolutely nothing has made me change that mindset, and I think he's wasting a very decent team right now that could be doing far better, but risking our FL status is something I don't ever want to see happen, and a change of management is the only thing I see doing that right now.

Edit: This is provided we win today. Failure to do so and it's #SarllOut

It's all a question of potential, form and likelihood. The season to date, and the last couple of months particularly, suggest that is beyond his ability because there would have seen signs.

It's effectively a roll of the dice. But I'd rather roll a 2 or higher to be safe than roll a 4...

It's not just about this season either, it's about setting us up for the future too.

He's shown no improvement in the two and half years he's been here. If anything he's making more strange decisions now than he was at the start.

I like the guy but if we stick with him until the end of next season we will either get relegated or dangerously close to it based on what we've seen in recent months. I don't expect him to suddenly get us to play remotely entertaining football on a semi-regular basis, or to stop picking his favourite players at the expense of more talented and suitable ones, or to stop making regimented and illogical substitutions that never have a positive impact on the game.

It's been a nice experiment at times but he's had a long time to establish himself and sort out basic errors, which he hasn't been able to do. If I had any faith in his ability to develop as our manager I would like the club to keep him on, but he's not doing much to help his chances

This is true - well put. We are all juggling sentiment with facts. We all like the bloke and want him to succeed but the greater good is the club (which we all love with a passion otherwise we wouldn't be on here)

I think PW has given him a fair deadline - lets hope he turns it round otherwise he can have no qualms really. We need to stay up
