In theory, and speaking as a lifelong non-drinker, I have no issue with it at all. Live and let live. Other football leagues do it so why not us? I used to enjoy the atmosphere on a terrace of beer (and fags, even as an anti-smoker, hypocritically) but as an ageing miserablist I probably wouldn’t want some kid pouring his beer over me when we score. Where I think it becomes absolutely ridiculous is in the boxes where alcohol is available but you’ve got to have the blind down to drink it. A bizarre and typically idiosyncratic nonsense rule that the English do so well. I’ve never understood how you’re allowed to drink yourself stupid before a game or at half time - so being pissed isn’t the issue - but you mustn’t be allowed to glimpse a ball being kicked if you’re sitting behind a glass sheet in a civilised environment! Crazy.
