I asked a police officer if action would be taken against the steward who swung a punch at a Lincoln fan. She said it was justified as the fans were swarming towards him (albeit separated by the perimeter wall). I asked if that was sufficient justification and whether the steward should have been professional in responding to, ahem, intimidation. She then said the Lincoln fan had aimed a punch at the steward (yes, I know the police are always consistent and never change their evidence, so I put this down to a genuine error on the part of the police officer). On this altered basis, she said that the steward was justified in throwing a punch at a Lincoln supporter. (I’m not sure if stewards/police are allowed to retaliate in such a manner - perhaps our resident old bill can advise.) I then walked off after saying that it seems as if the stewards and the police live by a similar set of principles (or words to that effect).

In conclusion, can’t the Stevenage supporter that threw the bottle claim that the Lincoln goal scorer was running towards him in an intimidating manner? If this doesn’t work, can he claim that the Lincoln goal scorer threw a bottle of water at him immediately after scoring?
