Those same trains used to often have slam doors in fairly recent memory (all the way up til 2019). I would say "and they coped" but I'm not sure it's particularly true.
If only there were a way to get trains from the north east to London on a different line so that intermediate stops could keep their full service...but unfortunately such a thing is impossible to imagine.
