I imagine they argue they are acting on behalf of both club and player. If the club pays agent fees on behalf of the player that amount should be taxable on the player as a benefit in kind subject to income tax. So instead the agent says they are acting for the club so that any fees the club pays can be tax deductible and the player doesn't get a tax bill on it.

Something that HMRC looks at. I wonder how many do it right!
