I guess it’s is all a matter of what someone defines as sport. Personally I’d not class running as a hobby as a sport (although as you say there’s the element of trying to better yourself and besides the health benefits the “win” can come in the shape of beating PBs).

The second you are running in competitive races then the entire point is winning or beating as many people as you can. If you get enjoyment from participating then just as with entertainment for the spectator it’s only a by-product.

In football terms I’d much rather a team of players who know there’s only one winner and strive to be that winner even if they fall short than those who are resigned to the fact it’s a one in 24 chance of winning the league and perform accordingly.
