"International breaks" have only been a thing since 2015 AFAIK. I think it was Sven bleating about not having enough time with his players who were all tired that kicked off the debate
Qualifiers used to be exclusively midweek so games continued on the Saturday either side.
And tournaments obviously took place in the English/European off-sesson.
