Guess it depends how broken the thumb is.

Yes they can strap it but not 'to' anything and they can't put a hard cast on. He needs to be able to throw himself into tacklea and grapple players without exacerbating it.

A finger injury may be OK but the thumb is key to pulling a shirt and holding players at corners, as well as softening a fall to the floor.

Could just amputate. Ashton would have bitten it off, spat it onto the sidelines and carried on.
