As long as the trains are using the same physical infrastructure and tickets allow you to break your journey, whenever they try stuff like this it's only really going to be advisory in nature.

If I have a full fare ticket valid between Stevenage and Kings Cross I can get on any train I please and it's up to them if they want to physically restrain me from doing so. You can only sell TL/GN tickets from Stevenage but that doesn't stop somebody buying a ticket valid on LNER from Doncaster, getting off at Stevenage and jumping back on the next one and they'd be entitled to do so.

Most people are probably like me and would rather do the four minute longer journey to avoid getting shouted at by platform staff.
