I think it's more likely, reading into it, that we are paying him a basic wage with no contractual commitment from either side.
The goodwill that keeping him generates across the squad is a big plus for the club in terms of morale, retention and even recruitment.
(I'm assuming PFA insurance would pay something if we didn't and he's an injured out of contract player, or maybe they top up what we pay?)
